under the rose
Под розой, т. е. по секрету, втихомолку, тайком, без огласки. Это буквальный перевод латинского sub rosa. Это выражение пришло из мифологии. Как гласит легенда, однажды Гарпократ, бог молчания, застал Венеру в двусмысленной ситуации. Купидон, сын Венеры и Марса, уговорил Гарпократа хранить тайну, дав ему никогда не увядающую розу. По этой причине потолки комнат во дворцах, отведённых для дипломатических переговоров, традиционно украшались розами, которые напоминали о том, что всё происходящее должно остаться в тайне.
